The annoying (rhetoric) question is: what is a good book?
I suppose some are generally agreed but with others one has a feeling,an instinct that it is good for you.I don’t mean morally… just that it speaks to you.Maybe like playing the piano if you keep going you develop a feeling. In mathematics some proofs are beautiful too.Maybe good books are thought so even by people from other countries. And reading and translating poetry is hard but some Russian poets were extremely good despite the suffering under Stalin etc.In the end there is no absolute definition.I suppose some music might be very good but you may not like it.Stravinsky’s Firebird almost cause riots when it was first performed,so I read [ it was before my time!]
Teaching is in your DNA. I get your point. But if what is a good book is subjetive, there is no advantage at all 🙂
Well,it’s not entirely subjective as in universities they have courses in the great classic books from the Greeks onwards. But when you move on and are reading on your own you read a lot and then you begin to know what you really get something out of.There may not be so many. Many people read trashy books to relax or romantic novels to cheer them up.I think you probably already have authors you love or topics you like to learn about judging by what you said before about that theologian who taught you and was on bad terms with the Pope… you must be well read…in your own language and Latin American novelists? Many men don’t seem to read novels
oooops, here we go. Plato is the “the fascist” for excellence. And Western culture was built over his “Dialogues”. Thomas Aquinas, a perverted mind. Descartes, a joke. Kant, another Boring christian joke, and the list goes on and on, and gets worse: Adam Smith (economic fiction), Viena´s circle…
I´ve read a lot of bad books and worse authors (and teachers who forced us to bought their books, that´s how it works here), so I´m still looking for a good book.
My apologies, my intention was to formulate a rhetoric question, not expose my personal issues with spanish education system 🙂
I am in sympathy with you.St Augustine has ruined the lives of many young Christians with his perverted views on women and sex.Babies were in a state of original sin
Shall we say, there are some good books but you have to find them yourself
Also if you wish to understand Western Culture you do need to know something about the people you mention and their role is our so called “civilisation”.St Augustine was a sexually obsessed disaster ruining the lives of millions of people by insisting that even touching a vagina whilst being born was sinful…
I wonder if the quote means something broader like the Parable of the Talents for example?
Thank you so much. It means a lot. Usually, my philosophic opinions lead to awful argues 🙂
I forgot St Augustine, you are totally right about this pervert “saint” 🙂 I had to study them. There is not a single original thought in a thousand years, literally (thanks, Jesus), so my list about terrible authors is very inclusive 😀
Talking about cool christians sins: be lefthanded, borrow money (surprise! Ambrosian Bank). Venice merchant, Shakespeare? That´s why the poor stupid asks for money to a Jewish 🙂
I think you are right about the meaning, but I would agree more with the quote if we “miss” the word “good”.
I think in English good has two meanings. One is ethical or moral. The other means “of value” or “interesting and well written”.For me a book on any topic is only good if it is well written, thoughtful and not a bunch of impressive pseudo-fashionable terms. But use your talents in whatever way you can. There is usually some choice in life… for many poor people in the Middle East there is very little. It is nice to know your views and what you think.Happy reading.Katherine
I get your point and I agree. With that definition I can name some good blogs and better bloggers… Probably none of them are professional writers 🙂
I love to chat with you, always teaching.
Happy reading! it´s better than Happy Christmas!!! You are a blessing, David.
You are very kind,David and I enjoy your questions and what you tell me.Sometimes I think I’ll stop writing but my readers inspire me..Hope you find more reading to enjoy,Thank you so much,Katherine
No, I´m not kind. I´m working on it and you lead with your example of kindness.
I love to ask, comment, and argue 🙂 but I know I´m too direct and sometimes not very polite.
I enjoy your post, daily. But I will not feel good adding my “two cents” every single day. It will be annoying for me, for you, and for your followers 🙂
If you think again about stop writing, give me a shout, I´ll tell you a couple of things, Sunshine! 😉
