The social function of poetry

“I hope this does not sound like an exercise in ambiguities. If so, let me add another: one of poetry’s chief aims is to illumine the walls of mystery, the inscrutable, the unsayable. I think poetry ought to be taught not as an engine of meaning but as an opportunity to learn to live in doubt and uncertainty, as a means of claimingindeterminancy. Our species is deeply defined by its great surges of reason, but I think it high time we return to elemental awe and wonder. Such a position is necessary to our communal health.

I try to teach my students the full magnitude of what can happen during the reading of a poem. The readerly self, if the music and strategies of the poem are a success, fades away to assume the speaker’s identity, or the poem’s psychic position. Once a reader has fully internalized the poem’s machinations, she collects a chorus within her and is transformed. This ritual generates empathy and widens our humanity. These might seem like grand dreams, but it is just such a belief in the power of poetry that spurs my pen to action, whether I am getting paid or not. “

Faith ignites

Hope and the infinite brain of being interact
Faith  is for the forlorn
Faith is not scorn
Goodness  is   always approximate
Do bad and become bad.
Fractals made my home infinite
Kill yourself  with kindness, instead of others.
Cruelty runs faster but blinder.
Armed struggles are too weighty with meaning.
To eat or not to eat when you are taking antibiotics
Pause before screeching or swearing
Always get washed before  you go to breed.
Buy a big bed  for when you are  both sulking.
Don’t frisk me.

Darting in exquisite geometry

Photo0074

How white and blue together recollect us
to the summer sky and the imagined swallows
darting in exquisite geometry
under the great domed space of the heavens,
like the Basilica in Constantinople
containing and giving space.
And how I held you for a moment that was infinite
and then you were gone like an angel fearing enchantment
into some finite boundaried world

Tell the truth or commit a great crime

My problem is strident conceit
In how I  can bear twisted feet
I never wear sandals
Nor go out with vandals
And I always  say,love ain’t defeat.

I think pride is a valuable trait
When finding an other to play
For  the humble get nowhere
Don’t even go there
Play your piano today.

Deceit seems a very good line
When trying to find husbands online
But when they set eyes on you
What on earth will you do?
Tell the truth or commit a great crime

Killing with kindness is right
As only God knows you’re a blight.
What people think of you
May not be perfectly true.
Pretend you can’t see without light.

Aggression is there in our genes
But too much can often demean
Save it for dust
Then wipe if you must
Smile for you’ll always be clean

Envy is a wonderful gift
The race always goes quite a drift
So envy no single one,
Envy the whole or none.
Keep walking and  may  you be swift

Rage may boil kettles  of acid
A fact quite unknown to the placid
Then when you drink tea
Scalded you’ll be.
Derive your own truth from the asses.

We could cut down the roses in our rage.

Grass and daisies have no   spikes nor thorns.
So we can run barefoot across the  lawns.

Why do roses hurt  our hands unknown,
When sheep don’t hurt the shepherd as they’re shorn?

We could cut down the roses in our rage.

Their   own aggression might bring down their death.

Yet, beauty in their form makes love engage.

So we ignore their useless, painful wrath.

Recklessly we love a spiky friend.

Enchanted by their learning or their face

But wounds unneeded bring this to an end.

Patience thins, we sever  this embrace.

Roses have a beauty that beguiles.
Shall we  then endure their thorns and wiles?

The cost of loving

At first there is a gaping wound of loss
But our blood clots and seals the wound  up tight
Any movement brings a painful cost

After time and months of pain have passed
The scab has formed ,our body does what’s right
At first there was a gaping wound of loss

Yet if we’re struck, the wound reopens fast
We must  be careful not to enter fights
Any movement brings a painful cost

Easing is a gradual,lonely task
And even then the pain can take a bite
In where was a gaping wound of loss

Every death  creates another ghost
But not an evil angel of the night.
Any movement brings a painful cost.

Let me see your face in dreams tonight
I can’t live without your kindly light
At first there was the sacred wound of loss
Love dies not but carries its own cost

Without your presence

Being home without  your presence dear
Without the warmth  that poured from your blue eyes
Makes me feel invisible right here.

I do not have antipathy to fear
Inevitably   panic rises high.
Drinking tea without  your presence dear

Sharper was the pain that  cut through me
I realised that Death was coming by.
I feel  unreal, while knowing I am here.

Then there is the suffering to believe
So from my mouth I gave a stuttering sigh
Coming home without  your  care so dear.

Oh, humans can’t escape  the sorrow of deep grief
A sheet of tears fell from my stricken eyes.
I feel my heart was emptied by a thief.

I never asked the question ,tell me why.
I know that all the living  come to die.
Being home without  your presence dear
Makes me feel I’m lost and not quite here.

What is alienation?

“THE BROADER THEORY OF SOCIAL ALIENATION

Sociologist Melvin Seeman provided a robust definition of social alienation in a paper published in 1959, titled “On the Meaning of Alienation.” The five features he attributed to social alienation hold true today in how sociologists study this phenomenon.

They are:

  1. Powerlessness: When individuals are socially alienated they believe that what happens in their lives is outside of their control, and that what they do ultimately does not matter. They believe they are powerless to shape their life course.
  2. Meaninglessness: When an individual does not derive meaning from the things in which he or she is engaged, or at lest not the same common or normative meaning that others derive from it.
  3. Social isolation: When a person feels that they are not meaningfully connected to their community through shared values, beliefs, and practices, and/or when they do not have meaningful social relationships with other people.
  4. Self-estrangement: When a person experiences social alienation they may deny their own personal interests and desires in order to satisfy demands placed by others and/or by social norms.

CAUSES OF SOCIAL ALIENATION

In addition to the cause of working and living within the capitalist system as described by Marx, sociologists recognize other causes of alienation. Economic instability and the social upheaval that tends to go with it has been documented to lead to what Durkheim called anomie — a sense of normlessness that fosters social alienation. Moving from one country to another or from one region within a country to a very different region within it can also destabilize a person’s norms, practices, and social relations in such a way as to cause social alienation. Sociologists have also documented that demographic changes within a population can cause social isolation for some who find themselves no longer in the majority in terms of race, religion, values and world views, for example. Social alienation also results from the experience of living at the lower rungs of social hierarchies of race and class. Many people of color experience social alienation as a consequence of systemic racism. Poor people in general, but especially those who live in poverty, experience social isolation because they are economically unable to participate in society in a way that is considered normal.

He  woke and cried for hills to relocate.

I watch the television with no sound
A  nervous looking man has read the News
Boris Johnson’s getting  out of bounds
The Western wind will get into his troos.

Now there is a football match on grass
The players move like birds fly round about
A man has slipped and landed on his arse
Another one just gave himself a clout

An alien being from another  world
Would be concerned at humans chasing balls.
We should be asking what is  pi when  squared
Or up in Teesdale, visiting High Force.

My loved one wept as  he needed the Sea
To walk along the shore and look for shells.
But  it was much too late and could not be
His heart was failing, punishing his cells.

He  woke and cried for hills to relocate.
The Cleveland Hills  to be in Hertfordshire.
But as I’m only human I could not make
The world amend to fulfil  his desire.

He woke again and told me of his rage
I was the cause because I was his mate
I was too brilliant when we were engaged
And still I am not apt to wash a plate.

Then he whispered, how will you get home?
What will you do when you are all alone?
How will you live when I’m completely gone
Who will make you laugh, my love, my hun?

I said I’d call a cab and get some sleep
Or maybe sit  in silence for a weep
I had to push him off, so he could leap
Into the boat to make that final trip.

I felt another person come to life
Inside of me because I was his wife.
This person knew what I should do that day
I must sing as he  passed clean away.

I

Just war, the shadow answered, that’s my task.

Anything to declare, they bluntly asked
Gold or silver, drugs stuffed up your ass?
Just war, the shadow answered, that’s my task.

Do you believe a just war can exist?
You’ll find that out when you have let me pass
Anything else, they bluntly, coldly, asked

No, nothing, you can search me if you must.
My declaration, reason has surpassed
More wars, the figure ranted, that’s my task.

I declare the world is done and bust
Though Jesus died and we’ve just been to Mass
What did that do for Hitler, the guards asked?

What we choose has existential risk
As if we live enclosed in walls of glass
Bombs, the figures chanted, they’re our task.

Shall we let these strange, black figures pass?
War is coming, guns and poison gas
Anything to declare, the guards just asked?
Another war and starting it’s unjust

Apostrophes and how to cope with them

Photo0074

http://www.dictionary.com/e/apostrophes-101/

“The apostrophe causes so much strife in part because it’s the culprit in two of the most commonly confused pairs in English: you’re/your and it’s/its. Possessive pronouns (like your and its) never take apostrophes, but their soundalike friends are contractions that require apostrophes. We all struggle with these when writing and proofreading our work, but here’s a quick trick: try replacing the ’re or ’s with are or is. If the syntax works, then you need the apostrophe; if not, it’s a possessive pronoun. For example, “It’s Sunday” can be written “It is Sunday,” while “The school locked its doors” can’t be written “The school locked it is doors.” Likewise, “You’re late” can be written “You are late,” while “I saw your note” cannot be written “I saw you are note.”

The apostrophe has a number of other lesser-known uses. It can replace omitted numbers (e.g. the class of ’72, the ’20s, etc.) and letters in written pronunciation slang e.g. gone fishin’. It can also be used to indicate plural letters, as in p’s and q’s, two A’s and four B’s, etc.”

Let us  bless the water and the bread

Can they not return, those much loved dead
Who leave such empty spaces in our hearts
Which like the hearts of mothers, fathers  bleed?

“Ash to ash” is what the Priests have said
But there is still a soul, a living part
Can they not return, those much loved dead?

Why will I not walk into the dread
Without a map or any kind of chart?
Why not trust the Word when all was said?

And so I linger late, without my  bed
Hoping  for a vision,for a start.
Can you not return,oh, needed dead?

Let us  bless the water and the bread
Bless us all before we too depart.
Why not trust the Word and what was said?

Now the holy banquet is prepared
The vital clue is  all our food is shared.
Can they not return, those much loved dead.
Ease the hearts of  humans as they bleed?

With this poem I thee truly read

With this poem I thee  truly read

With all my skilful blight I thee endow

I know not what your other lovers said

But will they lend you horses or a cow?

Without a handshake ,we are nearly dead

With all my mercies, joy ,I thee endow.

I know not what the judging angels said

We will get to heaven, some other how.

With this promise, I thee  truly take

To be my lawful and unlawful mate.

And after all, it’s for thy  kitty’s sake

I consent to eat my dinner from your plate.

For prayers and vows confused  have made me wild

But soon God’s mercy makes all  lovers mild

Elastic

Photo0060

I will love you like a big elastic band would,
Holding you but not constraining,
I will be like a giant paper clip
Keeping all your bits connected.
I will be a sheet of paper
On which you write your  thoughts.
I will be a curtain on your window
To shade you from the glare.
I will be a briefcase that you hold in your hand.
But I refuse to be a wastepaper basket.
To hold your garbage.
I do have my limits
Though they are elastic.
But even elastic is not infinitely stretchy.
And neither am I

She let his presence, alien, interrupt

A child was howling in the Coffee Shop
No-one looked  and no-one intervened
His mother let the hope he had be cropped.

In a cliche, she looked fit to drop;
Demented by the second child, who screamed
A child was howling in the Coffee Shop

The mother seemed about to  fall or flip
Until her friend came with a joyful beam
She  let him make  more noise , yet hoped he’d stop

Gesticulating with  both hands and lips
Her sentences  flowed out  like mountain streams.
A child was wailing in the Coffee Shop

The tears spread wide, until a mop
Was wielded by a waiter sent to clean.
She let his presence,  alien,  interrupt

Unrelenting is the care that women warps.
In such lives we  may turn mean and sharp.
A child was moaning in the Coffee Shop.
His mother  wiped his eyes, caressed  his lips.

Can anyone write poetry?

TS Eliot said that the greatest difficulty for a poet is to distinguish between “what one really feels and what one would like to feel”...

How to write poetry: Poet Wendy Cope explains what makes a really superb poem

The best poets read widely, says Wendy Cope. Of course this will influence their work – but how else are they going to find out what makes a really superb poem?

He was an elderly man and he had queued up with the people who were waiting for me to sign their books. When his turn came, he announced unapologetically, “I don’t read poetry. I write it. I’ve brought you a copy of my book.”

If he had been younger, I might not have been so polite. I smiled, took the book and thanked him. Later on a quick glance through the self-published volume confirmed what I already knew: the poems were no good. People who never read poetry don’t write poems that are worth reading.

It’s a free country, of course, and anyone can write whatever they like. However, if you are interested in writing well, in working at being a better poet, then the most important piece of advice that anyone can give you is that you have to read both recent poetry and the poetry of past centuries. That’s how you learn. The elderly gentleman must have come across some poems at some point in order to have a concept of what a poem is. But vague memories of a few things you read at school are not enough.

It seems odd to me that anyone who hates reading poetry should want to write it at all. Are there amateur painters who never go to an art gallery? Or amateur musicians who never listen to music? Sometimes non-reading poets explain that they are afraid of being influenced. They don’t understand that being influenced is part of the learning process. Some of my earliest (and unpublished) poems read like poor imitations of Sylvia Plath. Others read like poor imitations of TS Eliot.

The eye is not a camera

The eye is not a camera taking shots
Our mind affects the aspect we perceive
And what it feels important it allots
Gives grace or hatred ,causes us to grieve.

When we are afraid ,we see the worst
We see disgrace or ruin as our fate
As if our self for horror has a thirst
So all the little details we collate

Yet when we love we see before us joy
The flowers sing, the birds dance in the air
We see no evil nor with hatred toy
All aspects of our world appear more fair.

We see not what is there,we see our self
To learn ,we must employ our own mind's wealth

Mary tries to find a soul-mate

Dotty cats 2

Mary decided that, purely out of scientific interest, she would join an on-line dating service. Her main problem was filling in the form. You need an degree in  English to even understand the form
Shall I  put down my profession? she asked Annie her late husband’s mistress.who lived right   next door. which is  exactly why  he chose her as he was  very lazy except when he was in bed with a vivacious lady.
Just put teacher,Annie told her.Don’t  give any more  details, she went on unthinkingly
Why?Do you think men wouldn’t really  like female mathematicians Mary asked  tentatively.I think my optometrist does, but then he is Jewish.
Wait till they have got to know you a bit first, said Annie
Actually I can barely work out percentages now,Mary confessed sheepishly.I don’t need numbers any more.
But is it moral to deceive men? she wondered out loud
Well,it’d better to  go step by step with many things.I’ll take a new photo of you after I set your hair. It’s your face which is most important and your eyes,
You could have fooled me,Mary told her ,recollecting colleagues gazing at her bosom in meetings.
Well,we don’t know for sure,Annie admitted scientifically yet paradoxically.
Two weeks later Mary had met a very handsome art teacher called Bill. They went walking in the woods and took photographs of trees and flowering shrubs and had tea in the cafe.Later they went out for dinner in a  Chinese restaurant where Dave the wonderfully amiable  transvestite paramedic was by chance eating with his brother Peter, who used to be a sheep farmer in Dent,Cumbria .
Hello,Dave, she said.This is Bill,my date.He’s an artist.
So you like really  clever women,Bill,Dave asked him courteously?
I’ve never met any, as yet,Bill replied.
Mary’s face went bright red as she realised that even if nobody  told Bill her job, she could not carry on deceiving  him.
Well, how about Mary ? Dave asked naughtily.
She’s    fairly  intelligent I think, said Bill. But I’m ok with that.
Suppose she was highly intelligent then?
I don’t think she’s  so  much above average.
Did you pass your maths O level.Dave asked politely
No,I never was good at maths but I am very gifted at Art.Brilliant.That’s why I am puzzled I can’t sell a picture.
Mary and Dave began to giggle.
Maybe you could paint Scrodinger’s cat? Mary cried
Where does he live, asked Bill.If it’s not too far I can drive over. Are they well off?
No, he’s dead,Mary chortled.I want a dust jacket for my book and you could  do  the design with a cat in the middle.
Bill looked a bit uneasy. He then turned to Mary and told her he was feeling faint so he ran out leaving her to pay the bill with her Sainsburys’ Mastercard or  even with money.
Oh,Dave, she said, why were you here? I liked him.He is handsome and fit.
It was just serendipity,he murmured as he admired her gorgeous red face and wild  curly hair.Maybe I’ll take you out  one evening? If Emile is ok with it.Emile being a cat did not speak English but  he made his feelings plain
So Mary was not going to see Bill again but at least she had been out for the day in the fresh air.Perhaps online dating is more difficult than we think\\

And so say all of us

What photos make good subjects for digital art?

???????????????????

A first I  drew with Microsoft Paint Program.I did cats, apples and abstracts

I found Microsoft Paint by accident.I had not heard of, knew nothing  such things.I spent about a year and a half playing with it  especially when I had a few months of illness.I  made some abstracts and then a great many cat pictures. It made me realize it o.k to simplify.to do so;you have no choice with Paint And that what I really like drawing is two objects in relation like two cats or apples.I tried three cats as well.It has that advantage… you discover what you personally like to draw.Ideally I’d prefer watercolor or pastels but I had no class I could manage then,

Arty party

What will happen?

Naive art!

This is the family of three… a child has arrived

Moving on from Paint,I discovered Artweaver and Paint.Net both free.I experimented and found for transforming a photo  it’s good to use  photographss with  strong shapes and pattern  like trees, cracks in the pavement, gates, fencing, certain buildings, climbing shrubs  on a wall…..natural patterns

What not to use.. don’t use photos with a large area in one color…even if it looks ok as a photograph

Apple tree and sunshineThe light here is a problem for using this in digital art… but it’s intriguing as it is

I found ignorance quite helpful in a way as I had no expectations…..which is very important I believe.

Is Boris Johnson going to go back to Turkey, land of his fathers?

Is Boris Johnson going to go back to Turkey, land of his fathers?
Is “May” an English surname? Nuts,I say.
What about “Gove”,did they mean Hove or Grove both  of which are English? Maybe Grave or Wave?
Cameron is a Scottish name as in the song,”The Camerons are coming again, again”
Very vulgar people, they should be sent to the  Outer Zebedees.
Perhaps they spelled Camera wrong! Camera sounds Spanish to me.Don Camera.Where;s your hair-oh?

When you start considering who is a foreigner,I admit I am.My head is a Scandinavian longhead so like my siblings I find it hard to buy a hat.As we are not Jewish,as far as I know,we don’t need hats though I would like a wig for  Xmas.A lot of Irish people have Jewish blood because of the wrecks of the Spanish Armada. Many sailors were Sephardic Jews.No doubt they were looked after by the Irish, who were in fact Picts,Scot,Dots or Whatnots.I am sure mixing genes is a good idea. And what fun it can be for some folk.
Maybe some of us prefer sex without jeans and who am I to stand in my way?
The Selfish Jeans could be a good children’ story for adults.
The Selfish gene by Dawkins is a silly book as Selfishness requires consciousness and choice. But I  know it was for publicity.Should a professor descend to those depths?
I am flummoxed that someone like that is a professor.
Still, it’s a fair game.anyone in Britain could be a  professor if they worked hard enough.
Yet it would be hard to tun a country with 65 million professors and no binmen or women.
When you think about it, the refuse collectors are more important. We can live without Richard Dawkins unless we marry him but rubbish is a health threat. He is bad for me because his imagining all religion is fundamentalist irks me.
I can understand  where he is coming from  and what is wrong with self pleasuring?a woman stabbed her husband because he came into her bedroom while she was enjoying a bit of that. She had locked the door so he thought she had a man in there.
I would prefer a man’s company with no sex to sex by myself.Because friendship is more rich,But I don’t think it is wrong.Maybe if young people were taught about it they would stop joining ISIS and lie all day on their beds.Well,I don’t suppose it takes all day unless you are very old.If you die  in the attempt ,it is nice to go like that.BTW  older men are more likely do die having sex with another woman than with their wife! What does that tell us?
Not much really but don’t go to bed with someone with a bad heart unless you are married to them.

Velvet and leather,they’re my passion

North Korea is acting weird
Donald Trump is to be feared
A bomb went off on a London tube
29 burned,hearts confused

But I only  care about love and fashion
Velvet and leather,they’re my passion
If someone drops a nuclear bomb
I’ll  be dressed with my usual aplomb.

I would have my lover by my side
I’d have held his arm if we’d been fried
I’d be dressed in   wool Fair Isle
On my face a cute little smile.

It takes your mind off politics
What is broken can’t be fixed
So spend your money on new clothes
That is how the economy grows

Though if the end is nigh, dear God,
The economy doesn’t care a sod.

Making a Fist

We forget that we are all dead men conversing with dead men.
                                                                  —Jorge Luis Borges
For the first time, on the road north of Tampico,
I felt the life sliding out of me,
a drum in the desert, harder and harder to hear.
I was seven, I lay in the car
watching palm trees swirl a sickening pattern past the glass.
My stomach was a melon split wide inside my skin.
“How do you know if you are going to die?”
I begged my mother.
We had been traveling for days.
With strange confidence she answered,
“When you can no longer make a fist.”
Years later I smile to think of that journey,
the borders we must cross separately,
stamped with our unanswerable woes.
I who did not die, who am still living,
still lying in the backseat behind all my questions,
clenching and opening one small hand.

With the monkeys, what a fine plaice to land.

I once had an email from a ghost.
I was eating a piece of white toast.
The message was clear.
It said,”I am not here”.
So I replied, “No need to boast.”

I had a text  from  the old one last year
After Xmas,I was full of black beer
It said ,Good4 U
I replied , &U2
Since then , I pretend I’m not here.

I had a letter from  the bank in my hand
When I slipped on a wide elastic band
It  catapulted me too
Regent’s Park Zoo
With the monkeys, what a fine plaice to land.

I forgot to keep my account book filled in
And I spent my last note on some gin
I like being tipsy
And meeting a gypsy
Or if not that one,I’ll make do with his twin.

The death instinct, the deadly Faustian themes

When you come back to me, my dearest one.
When you no longer hide away in dreams.
The golden  sun will rise for  us again

When all my work on earth is  past and done;
When I have felt the pain of what has been,
Will you come back to me, my dearest one?

Without your presence, I feel lost and pained.
But this is not eternal, though it seems.
The golden  sun will rise for me again

The last bell  rings , I’m silent and alone.
I am too simple to make cunning schemes
Will you come back to me, my dearest one?

Human life is brief; we share its pain;
The death instinct, the deadly Faustian themes;
The sacred sun will rise for us again .

I  live in  blackness  yet the angels lean
To shelter with their sacred wings my limbs.
Though  you  had to go , my dearest one,
Though loss may win, I still desire the sun
