Why even try to write a sonnet?
You must want to write before you begin but maybe a sonnet is not for a complete beginner.Indeed you may not know what it is.That means you’ve not read much and it does puzzle many writers and teachers who are sent poetry written by keen amateurs who have never read a poem for years. You can start easy with ballads and simople verse.
Writing a sonnet is a challenge and it took me afew years to even try. However it is a very good form for expressing grief, love aand the pains of life.If you read Shakespeare you know the best. But even if ours are not so good, writing is beneficial to our hearts and souls and it can connect us to other similar people all over the world for huge numbers of people do write as a hobby.I found that out on a website with a big membership.I think people in the USA so more keen to write than people here in the UK.Sometimes we sit and watch TV for hours but it’s more fun and pleasure to write or draw or make something like a lovely meal or some good quality cakes with less sugar and purer ingredients. All of these can connectus to others whereas passive acticity is a kind of death of overdone.
The best part about writing poems is that it seems to make it easier for us to understand poems we read either modern or classic and to admire the brilliance of the metaphysical poets [ my love] or enjoy the humour of Pam Ayres or the Englishness of Betjeman or the wonders of Russian poetry written under severe strictures in Stalin’s time
Would you like to write a sonnet?
This is a good website.I was very nervous about writing sonnets but I have begun to enjoy this now. However some are better as others and I believe it is partly due to the topic one chooses. And sonnets are not generally a good place for humorous writing.

Rereading favorite books
Sometimes we want to read the new novels from the Review in our weekend paper but for a few years I have taken great pleasure in reading books which I have already read once or even twice. I reread some of Nicholas Freeling’s novels this winter.I noticed some parts which I had not absorbed before. These were especially with the landscapes he creates. In fact he has a very painterly way of writing .A watercolorist’s way, perhaps. In that he reminds me,oddly, of Virginia Woolff.
He was a writer who changed the nature of the detective story.I read him for his depictions of relationships, people, different countries. My favorites are the Castang series which were never filmed… a great pity but who could play this man realistically? I suppose I have similar values to Freeling which always helps. He clearly loves women which is rare, in my view
Since I began this blog
Old wooden table looks like my furrowed brow
I have during the course of this blogging found some new and interesting authors but all the books are really hard.I am struggling to read them but at the same time I am very happy to have found them.
I may not post much for a bit as I want time to mull over these books and what I am learning.I find writing here has lead me to learn a lot and I hope it’s true for some of you readers… a whole new world has opened for me,,,I may not be blogging here but please look at the authors I’ve recommended if you have time to learn.
A new author for me:Kenneth Gergen
Ihave been reading his earlier book,The Saturated Society which I also strongly recommend.I found it good reading and I now know what post modernism is about for better or worse. He can be very funny too When trlating his personal experiences. If you can get these from your library you will be intrigued. And his prose is great too.
I am learning so much.

And laughing too

When I was fifteen or so, my mother waded through the sea of clothes, books, school work and teenage flotsam and jetsam that covered my floor, and sat on the edge of my bed with tears in her eyes. I had to clean up, she said. It was really important that I get the room sorted. I made some excuse, but she cast her eyes downwards, subtly wiping a tear from the corner.
“I had a friend who never cleaned up. Every time you went into her house, the house was a complete bomb site. She had junk all over every surface. And she ended up in Ward 12B.”
Ward 12B, for those who never had the chance to go there, was the mental health ward at the old Canberra Hospital. So apparently, Mum believed that mess drove you mad and that cleaning was protective. It’s a particularly amusing little…

Could you love an insect?
We were told when Robert the Bruce was in prison he survived by studying a spider creating its webs,It consoled him.So the spider helped him but was hardly a pet.First it was totally independent and more important, insects don’t have faces. They have eyes but no expression. And they are too small.A cat may feel like a baby…but a fly will not
Which makes me think we love animals and even birds because we can detect a personality or imagine we do…….we can ascribe feelings and love to them.Perhaps we make them into mini human beings?
As insects are so different and smaller generally,as they are cold blooded, they seem too different to become pets.I have been known to address a spider as I help it out of the bath but I can’t distinguish that one from another. With cats, even when they are the same color,we can recognise their eyes,And they are very aware of our feelings…and wish to comfort.
But with insects we can get benefit by see how different they are and studying their lives .Ants are very kind to each other and carry a damaged ant back to the nest, for examplle. So they can provide food for thought..
