Losing one’s self again

There are trends in society to encourage us to build our self esteem and to value ourselves… to develop and achieve  a place suited to our talents.. but what is best for me is when I lose myself in something.I was reading an old blog of a friend and was quite absorbed and went into a different state of mind..then I regretted I don’t manage to lose myself enough being  a housewife and having much on my mind and being busy.

Sometimes it can happen when we love a person.Sometimes a wonderful landscape feels like home.. other times a sunset across the Irish sea from the cliffs of the Isle of Man where myriad butterflies swirl and float over flowers and rocks.

Modern life, the News, talk, excitement of the wrong sort seem to lock us into  our self and frighten us so we forget the value of fining something in which to lose ourselves and grow as a result. Sitting by a river  fishing, knitting, sewing,a book, many things can elicit this response  And remember how horror filled was the self consciousness of adolescence and how good to forget one’s self being more comfortable and accepting of appearance and image..How to live like a wild flower for a time… and be happy not to be a rose but just a tiny wild geranium or a moderate  sized  gentle pink flower in a arden

Reading Lawrence Le Shan

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lawrence_LeShan

For many years I have enjoyed the writings of Le shan.Recently I discovered that he had written a book about Evil.He also treated people with cancer for many years.I admire him

I am reading it slowly.I recommend,Alternate Realities from which some of his terminology comes. His book in Meditation is the best I have ever found.I was reading it as I was on a train going to my father in law’s funeral and a beautiful image cane to my mind

Lawrence LeShan -A man will be effective to the degree that he is able to concentrate! Concentration is not basically a mode of doing but above all a mode of Being. (Lawrence LeShan)

A paradox about difficulty

Cat free

After I mentioned the book by Lawrence LeShan yesterday I was thinking about meditation and about difficult times in life.Often when things are hard for us, we get stressed,we get the”fight or flight” response which released adrenalin   and other hormones and we get narrower vision [I have actually had “tunnel vision“,it’s not a metaphor].We are ready to attack somebody or to quickly run away.Usually neither is possible so this response makes life worse. We get worn to a shred

When we need help,we can get in touch with something within us.The paradox is that we need to be relaxed to get in touch with this inner deeper self.We need to trust in something despite the dangers. In religious terms, trust in God is a common phrase. But not many Christians  I have known really do trust in God.I prefer to call it  the Unknown. After all, what or who was it that made the sperm and egg unite and then made the embryo grow into you?It was not by will power and effort that your mother grew you.It was by allowing this inner wisdom to act upon the embryo. So relaxing ,allowing, being are needed. How can we let go and trust in the inner deep self to help us?Maybe when we are in despair because we tried everything else and nothing works. This is a concern I am dwelling on today.I feel ,being Sunday,it is appropriate tio think of what some would call the spiritual side of lifeI was helped once when in a tragic  situation.I kept looking for a way out.Sitting quietly one day I found I suddenly knew I could do nothing except return to my notmal duties and accept the tragedy. We need to feel safe in order to trust

The best book on meditation….by Lawrence LeShan

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/271249.How_to_Meditate

This book is by Lawrence Le Shan.I’ve had mine many many years.Since then it’s become much more popular and there are hundreds of books on it…I also admire LeShan’s other writing and his work.I used his meditation when travelling alone on a train to a funeral many years ago.

You can find out more  about  him here. He worked with cancer patients.I read his book on that when I thought I might have it.He seemed to feel that  if you lead an uncongenial life to please your parents or others and  do not follow your own inner callings you are more likely to get it.He’s a fascinating man.His wife is interesting too and very bold in her thinking..Eda LeShan.

Other good authors on this topic are Patricia Carrington [General discussion and warnings   about excessive meditating]  and Hubert Benson [Relaxation Response.].

Find the peace of your center

Deep in a pitiful saddened state,

Relaxation is hard to await

You feel so tense you can’t sit down

Your eyes glare out, and  then you frown.

You talk too fast, you lack patience

You lose touch with your common sense.

New cats today

Follow instructions from a book?

oh,no your entire brain’s been spooked.

So what to do to help yourself,

Not to mention your  mental health?

I discovered that very deep within

My self is always quiet and still.

To gain tranquility we  must sit

And to consciousness this peace admit.

December writing 2012

Deep down inside you are at rest

And with love your soul is blessed.

All you have to do is sit

To get in touch with this sweet state.

Your loving peace is always there

But you have spend time to discover her.

Sitting may sound  a simple  skill

Were we capable of will

Pretend your chair is full of glue

We have some here called UHU.

Pretend  that you cannot get up,

An elephant  is sitting on your lap.

Gaze patiently at a tall  tree’

We share an affinity with these,

With flowers, cats bats and bumble bees.

So let all  words and thoughts  now go.

Your mind will shift until it’s slow,

Relaxing improves our perception,

Doing nothing is good for the complexion.

I love to look out,

And see birds about.

While glimpsing if any of them have specs on.
