I used to like very quiet men
I used to like very quiet men
Who studied their Bach and knew Zen
But then you came along
Humming a song
I felt bang crash love with you then.
Eyes are important as well.
In them the soul seems to dwell.
But your eyes were so red
From the dust by the bed
That should have rung a warning bell.
For men who are allergic to dust
Have to be helped to adjust.
Expose them by degrees
Until they don’t sneeze!
Or else daily dusting’s a must
I have loved you and I’ve held you.
A beautiful poem
I have loved you and I’ve held you.
Many years,you have been mine;
If the time has come for parting
Let us embrace for one last time.
You know you have to leave me,
Though you desire a longer stay.
Let me hold you in my arms now
For just tonight and perhaps one day.
Then I’ll watch you travel on,sweet.
We take this last step all alone.
I’ll be here beside you watching.
I shall feel when you are gone.
May you accept, may you surrender
I’m sure you’ll reach the promised land.
Into this earth my tears will fall, love,
As I recall your tender hands

| But am I whole, doctor? What would it mean? Can you tell?
Yes,half of you is in the waiting room. Wow…is it my soul? I fear so,dear. |
| Shut your coal in the cellar in case Mrs Thatcher’s ghost passes and sees it
She will privatize you and send police to thwart you. |

| I was wined, sealed yet bothered to care for him
Was he there for you? No,but he was bare for me. |
| Silence in the home is an old idea
So why did it not work? We need to talk |
| Silence is good for your hearers
But they will not be hearers anymore! A paradox. |

Speech
I am unable to find what I wanted to about Bion and thinking but I found something else
from which I copied a quote
It is too often forgotten that the gift of speech, so centrally employed, has been elaborated as much
for the purpose of concealing thought by dissimulation and lying as for the purpose of elucidating
and communicating thought. – Wilfred Bion
If Jesus had had a biro
If biros had been invented 2,000 years ago,
And paper,
Would we have a copy of the original
Words of Christ?
Would the sobs of angels have been translated
By the bards into images
Of agonizing desolation
At his death?
If St Paul had had a biro
Would he have written more letters?
Possibly with illustrations?
His epistles are many already
If computers had existed would
Apostles have sent emails to their
Missionaries reminding them
Of the true Word?
No.
If computers had existed
Not many would have been outside
Listening to Jesus,
And his parables.
We would be sending messages
And shopping on-line
Or looking up the thoughts of
Ludwig Wittgenstein,
Reading about Prince Charles’ view
On architecture,and wondering
About the Coalition’s treatment of the lower orders.
We would probably not have the space for Jesus’s words.
So if He came now, in form
would He show himself
To obtain some attention?
Would he come as a great cloud of dust and ash?
No.too dramatic.
A storm ,a volcanic eruption?
No,too unavoidable.
Or would he come as a Newsreader on I.T.V?
And from his tragic eyes would we get a message
In between the adverts,
That something basic in us was dying away.
The poetic impulse.
Could He would come back in a fleeting expression
On your face, when you looked at a robin
On your bird feeder.
Or when you smiled
At a stranger in the street.
Maybe He would come back in a special
Silence between you and your lover
When you gaze with grateful delight
At each other,wanting nothing.
Maybe in that happy space inside you
When you are alone,
Loving and not desiring,,
Just happy with that empty space.
Maybe He would come back as a ball point pen
You found in the street,which
Made you write to your sister again.
He could help you to write a better message
That she might understand
Everything that had gone wrong
Between you, so the writing would raise your soul
From the deep well into which it had fallen,
Right next to where Jesus was healing a woman.
That was your soul he was touching.
But you don’t need to know.
The old words don’t work anymore.
The Word has to come again,
But how shall we hear it?
Listening is a dying Art
Here.
But He is here anyway,
Somewhere we may
Rarely have been
So far,
Like the Arctic Circle,
Plenty of empty space and silence there.
Boundaries of the Mind
I found this whilst looking for something else but it look interesting to a student of human nature.
I have loved you and I’ve held you.
I have loved you and I’ve held you.
Many years,you have been mine;

Let us embrace for one last time.
You know you have to leave me,
Though you desire a longer stay.

Much as we may love all creatures,.never go to bed with anything you may roll onto in the night……………Including very small men.

Why I love mice
Mice, don’t you love them? They live in your garden shed and eat the twine for the beanpoles you were saving for next summer. They finish up the crumbs the birds left behind. They don’t want you to take them for a walk and, hey, they need no grooming.;… they provide free exercise for your cat and emergency rations when you forget to buy catfood.Women are supposed to fear mice as they may run up our legs and disappear.Still,it’s a kind of compliment,in a strange way. They provide that little touch of excitement we all need now and then.Mice, not in my bed though..The cat. might eat them and disturb my slumbers. Then I’d be over-tired

94. You can cure me, right?
Very short and funny
“You can cure me, right?”
The psychiatrist pretended to polish her glasses.
“It’ll take time. Patience. Perseverance. But yes, I think I can cure you. You haven’t lapsed a single time since you sat down on that sofa for example. That tells me there is hope.”
The patient expressed his gratitude through a subtle tear rolling from his eye and – later – by writing a big fat check for twelve more sessions at doctor Monroe’s.
“So what was his problem?” her secretary asked.
“You remember that leaflet about protecting the bees the government stuffed into every mailbox in town not that long ago?”
“Bee a friend.”
“You recall the title, hey?”
“It’s a nice pun.”
“Well, apparently he’s the guy that wrote it. Big shot copywriter. Great at witty puns. Trouble is, he can’t stop punning anymore. Every time he hears the word bee or honey or even pollen…

The Degradation of Ethics
See this
As I teach Aristotle’s Nichomachean Ethics (along with the thought of Epicurus and Epictetus), I’m struck by just how much our ethical discourse has changed. This is attested to by what is absent in these discourses as much as by what is present. What’s so striking in Aristotle, is that the question of ethics is one of eudaimonia, happiness, or human flourishing. How ought we live our lives in order to attain human flourishing or happiness, he asks? Similarly, in the case of the Epicureans and stoics, the question is one of ataraxia, peace of mind, or tranquility. For these thinkers there is a clear telos to ethical thought and action: happiness and tranquility.
Such questions seem thoroughly absent from the ethical thought of the last couple hundred years. Ethics instead seems to become a question of how to determine the rules that should govern behavior and…

With a paper bag on your head?
Last week we were offered a new kind of advice program here in the UK.Two people in a relationship would have sex inside a box in the studio and then come out and talk about it or their problems.I did not watch this. Then today I read in the paper that a new book has come out about Masters and Johnson the pioneers [?) of sex research in modern times. They began with prostitutes but this was insufficient so they used volunteers who masturbated or had intercourse in front of the cameras. But they were allowed to put a paper bag on their head for secrecy.
From these films much information was gathered about things like female orgasm and other mysteries.I believe they used couples too
However, will the sex life of people willing to have sex in a public room with paper bags on their heads really tell us much about the sex life of the average person. Some people might be impotent but get turned on by the paper bags!It took away the human element
Now you can read some new discoveries

Levinas and Heidegger
I seem to be led between these two philosophers.Levinas was an admirer and student of Heidegger until the Nazi era.Though Levinas’ wi fe and daughter survived WW2 hidden in a Monastery, the rest of his family who were Jews in Lithuania perished. in the Nazi Camps. This made him rethink his philosophy and led him into putting Ethics in primary place. And the primacy of our awareness of /responsibility the other as our first concern.Indeed that is what makes us human subjects
Perhaps only a Jewish person has the right to talk about Ethics after the Holocaust.
I put two links below.

Our vocations
I think my vocation is sacred
I keep seeing visions of God
He’s like a bright light
Exceedingly right
Does anything seem to be odd?
I have a calling to follow
I just do not know the details
I pray and I wait
By yonder lychgate
Do vocations ever get into the Sales?
I would like it if I could buy one
I’ll give you all the money I’ve saved
Sell my idea?
My dear,no fear!
Just consider how well I’ve behaved.
Everyone has a vocation
To be who they know that they are.
Yet I am not me
Without you to be
Here in my arms by the fire.
I’ll get an answer tomorrow
As I dream of God during the night
She will give me an image
And the much needed courage
To go on till I see the Light.
The problem is one of translation,
For God speaks in symbols not words
Symbols are wells
in which truth dwells.
And the Spirit swoops down like a bird.
Why not find your vocation?
It’s possible whatever your age.
Attend to your dreams
and how your life seems
Vocations are now all the rage.
Because real knowledge will hurt.
I don’t want to see reality
But I don’t want to lose your care
I want to go on being selfish,
Yet having you always there.
I don’t want to acknowledge your feelings
I ‘m aware I have been very curt
I want to go on not noticing you
Because such real knowledge will hurt.
The longer I go on being blind to you,
The longer I choose not to see,
The more I will hurt you ,my loved one,
The more hard and unfeeling I’ll be.
I don’t want to see reality
I’m frightened of what I may find
I hope a friend will be with me,
While I traverse the dark shades of my mind.
I am afraid to look at at reality
But it’s safer for me if I do
I hope I’ll find enough fortitude
To be able to bear what is true
One meeting of souls
Goodbye,I say,goodbye.

Standing together,
We lean forward touching foreheads lightly
Eyes closed for a moment
Tenderly we respect
The other’s boundaries.
Yet I feel your heart beating too,
As it it were me.
We lean for a few more moments like this.
Wordless.
Holding the broken places,with love.
Then we turn and walk away
Such moments last forever
In the eternity that Love creates
Foreheads touching,
Skin to skin..
Boundaries of the inner and the outer
You are another;
A real human person
Wanting nothing;wanting everything
I shall remember your smile.
You were with me once
And now we go our ways
Our own difficult journeys.
One meeting of souls
Creates its own symbol
May you be blessed
May the fire not burn you
Nor the water drown you
May the Lord keep you always near him.
May He protect your spirit.
May he give you strength always.

“What is called thinking” by Heidegger
“What is called thinking” by Heidegger
This seems a good introduction to the book and to discussing thinking in our era
Short Extract from the article
Heidegger refers to Nietzsche’s diagnosis of our age as a time of nihilism: “The wasteland grows.” If it is Being that most calls for thought, what most calls to be thought about in our age is the forgetting or withdrawal of Being. And it is due to the withdrawal of Being that we are still not thinking. In contrast to Hegel’s notion of history, Heidegger’s is a history wherein we find ourselves increasingly fallen from and more distant from Being. Being withdraws in our technological age as the experience of thinking is reduced to calculative rationality. “Thinking” has become the experience of using rationality as a device to operate on a world of things already reified into a network of ends. In our age, Heidegger (1968) will go on to argue, ratio has trumped legein. The thoughtfulness of calculative rationality threatens to obliterate the possibility for being-thoughtful.

What is thinking 3
An article from Critical Thinking website which has useful links
What is thinking 2
A useful article
What is thinking?
A propos of the quote from Doris Lessing,I turn over this question in; my mind.Thinking is not having sentences or words passing through our conscious mind like,I envy that person who has just been on a cruise/bought a large house;did I lock the door; is my new neighbour gay;why am I here?
I assume people meditate to stop that mental chatter. If you stop it you may find a painful feeling hiding.
So what is thinking? My mind goes blank. Is it a conversation with onesself or another?
When we have to make a decision, talking it over enables a seeing of different aspects/by one’s self, thinking may be a kind of confrontation .facing some idea,,,,dwelling on it.
It seems so simple but I don’t know what it is.

Be off or I’ll follow your blog everywhere
Doctor,I have got this awful feeling
What is it?
I feel someone is following me all day
I told you not to start blogging. How many followers have you got?
About 120.And I am following myself too.
Why did you follow yourself?
To see where I was going to.
And where was it?
I went to the bathroom.
Did you follow yourself in?
I waited outside.
That was very wise.
So why do I feel odd?
I can’t say.I’ll have to follow you too to see what I can discover. What’s the name of your blog?
How my heart speaks
That is an error.Hearts don’t speak.
It’s a metaphor.
Your trouble is you are too brilliant. You need to become dumb like the rest us
Now,that “dumb” is a metaphor.
Well,l’ll be blowed.I never knew I spoke in metaphors.I am thrilled
See… how do you feel?
Be off or I’ll follow your blog! I want to remain ignorant to all higher thinking
Call yourself a doctor?
No,I’m the technician. The doctor is sick
Well, whadda you know! The doctor is sick
He’s only human
Only human?
He’s not superman.
I don’t want superman following me.
But anybody can follow you.
What a mess.I’ll unfollow myself now and get some peace
Criticising dogs
Dogs! Who wants them? They can’t talk, they can’t cook, they can’t wash up.They can’t wash themselves properly so have to be groomed by somebody else.Aw.dogs!Who wants a dog? They can’t even make the bed though happy to sleep on it.There’s saying.Let sleeping dogs lie .So they can’t even tell the truth. but why let them lie?Is the truth too disturbing? But at least they don’t smoke…. or do they?I have my suspicions but no proof as yet.Maybe they smoke in the bath?
