I had no idea that it took so long to find homes for survivors of the death camps

Displaced Persons Camps

The Displaced Persons Camps (DP camps) which were set up in Austria, Italy, and the Western occupation zones of Germany, held more than 200,000 Jews. During the first few months, until the liberating armies formulated a clear policy toward them, the survivors lived in extremely harsh conditions in these DP camps. They were even occasionally housed with German prisoners and Nazi collaborators. In the autumn of 1945, in the American occupation zone and later in the British zone, a policy took shape that substantially improved the lives of the Jewish DPs. They were housed in separate camps where they were given some authority to manage their own affairs. Here they created an intensive political and cultural life. Many of them married and started families.

In 1946 and 1947, the number of DPs in the camps rose substantially, as additional Jewish refugees continued to arrive from Eastern Europe, many through the Beriha’ movement (The Beriha was a Zionist organization, which tried to aid survivors in leaving Europe for the Jewish Homeland). The increase of the DPs population affected the international public opinion, a fact that exerted increasing pressure on the British and American governments in order to find a solution to their situation. This kind of activity was especially evident in Zionist political groups, where attempts at clandestine emigration to Palestine increased. The opening of Israel’s borders after it’s independence, as well as the adoption of more lenient regulations in western countries regarding the immigration of survivors, led to the closure of most of the DP camps by 1950. Föhrenwald, the last functioning DP camp remained in existence until 1957.

Back to reality:the way we were and are

I have a Jewish friend who asked me why the Allies did not help the Jews in Europe. It seems not unlike the fear of letting in immigrants now… but worse. And we know Churchill did questionable things like bombing Dresden which had no military reason. In fact if you read the novel Dresden Green  you will find that it was full of refugees.

Dresden Green

Main article: Bermuda Conference

From April 19, 1943 through April 30, 1943, during the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising of 19 April to 16 May, representatives of the governments of the United Kingdom and the United States held an international conference at Hamilton, Bermuda. They discussed the question of Jewish refugees who had been liberated by Allied forces and of those who still remained in Nazi-occupied Europe. The only agreement made was that the war against the Nazis must be won. The US did not raise its immigration quotas and the British prohibition on Jewish refugees seeking refuge in the British Mandate of Palestine remained in place. A week later, the American ZionistCommittee for a Jewish Army ran an advertisement in the New York Times condemning the United States efforts at Bermuda as a mockery of past promises to the Jewish people and of Jewish suffering under German Nazi occupation.[8] Szmul Zygielbojm, a member of the Jewish advisory body to the Polish government-in-exile, committed suicide in protest.[4]

Would you like to know a few Latin phrases?

 BARBA TENUS SAPIENTES

A man described as barba tenus sapientes is literally said to be “wise as far as his beard”—or, in other words, he might look intelligent but he’s actually far from it. This is just one of a number of phrases that show how the Romans associated beards with intelligence, alongside barba non facit philosophum, “a beard does not make a philosopher,” and barba crescit caput nescit, meaning “the beard grows, but the head doesn’t grow wiser

1 querían aferrarse a volar

When will they pay and go?

From the Times of Malta….Syrian toddler

Where have all the cowards gone?
Wrong time passing
Where have all the cowards gone
Wrong rhyme ago?
Where have all the cowards gone?
In the government half of them
When will they pay and go?
When will old  Satan show?

See him in a liar’s eyes
See him in the murky skies
See him  laugh as children die
See him, hear him by and by
when will we ever learn?

Let children drown in warm blue seas
Shut the doors to refugees
Like we did to Europe’s Jews
Just buy red poppies and  feel pleased
When will we truly mourn?
When will we ever grieve?

When we kill others it harms us
As do envying and lust
Sin harms the sinner and the just
Will we never,ever  learn

People fighting in Hyde Park
Stabbing  policemen for a lark
If these are English, count me out
As racist slogans they all shout……
Maybe original sin  is here
As raging people  take the air.

Fun for children

As well as these amusements, the market  square had a large sandpit where children were making sandcastles and the ice-cream van was of course drawn up nearby.I think it is very  nice for children who are not able to go on holiday. We have a lot of Turkish people here and no doubt some may be afraid to pay a visit this summer.I go to a Turlish coffee shop and they are so courteous it’s like we were 50 years ago.
Lots of young families were walking about. Some people with very striking faces; a man with a big lanky frame, blonde hait and a very impressive nose holding the hand of a little girl and on the other side a lovely young woman. When I came here I was regarded as a foreigner…. still am  by some  neighbours… because people come into my house who are not family.

La vieillesse devrait brûler et rave à la clôture de la journée ;

Replenishing wieder meinen inneren Feuer .

Palatis contritio in viis Romanorum
Et cum sol nocte , rufus erat,
Luna est, sine dubio
Me tenuit fugere voluit
In oculis furorem meum stellas mood
Mens fuit, in ictu

 Ante horam non despicias .
Ahenum replevi gelu siccu
Cattus stragulam vestem recubisse
Numquid me a Postcard Ex Rhyl vel Colwyn Bay
Et aquilæ retinent in saepti ferarum
Et convivia omnibus au lait
Et dedit mihi uxor calce,
Quid est carus interrogavit
Ego reprehendo in quoaum

No sense no words

IMG_0021 - CopyRuin  roamed on roman roads
While red was the night sun
The moon was out, without a doubt
‘Twas I she wished to shun

The sight of stars  made mad my mood
My mind was on the blink
I filled the kettle with dry ice
Before the clock could wink.

The cat was sprawling  on the rug
The mice were in the bath
I lost my temper in the yard
So now I know no. wrath

Did you send me a  postcard
From Rhyl or Colwyn Bay
They keep chained vultures in a zoo
And serve  meals all au lait

At last I woke up from my dream
And gave my  spouse a kick
What is wrong the dear man asked
I blame the tumeric

Ruminare

Being so prolific is a feat

Winnowed was the produce of my heart
And fortune favoured me upon that day.
For what remained was worthy of respect
And helped me rise above the fumes and fray.

The consciousness of good was well received
My soul and heart were like soaked bread in wine.
Although I did not doubt the creative word
To gain this mark of honour made it mine.

As being so prolific is a feat,
And work well done is cherished and admired
Then I shall rest and let my mind roam free
Replenishing again my inner fires.

The labourer is worthy of his hire.
The words will come to those who that desire

When true love’s gone

When true love’s gone and doom hangs over head
When life runs like a river to the sea
Then shall I take new lovers to my bed?
And with their carnal touch consoled be?

When my love lies,so breaks my tender heart.
When life seems grey and rocks bestrew my path.
Then, shall I my life of evil start?
And on the world shall I bestow my wrath?

When true love lies and wrecks all loyalty.
When puzzlement makes all my world seem mad.
Then I shall upend causality
And let myself do deeds which make me glad.

For I have love’s sweet child inside my soul
And I shall tend her till at last she’s whole

Thinking is bad for the ecstatic

photo1137 hhhhyy

I ruminate every morning at eight
About my  behaviour and  weight
I’m hyper-vigilant  all day
I’m paranoid and fey
Hypersomnia keeps me awake.

I have heard y few voices of late
For Hebrew,I  use Google translate
For I record all the sounds
Here and around
To try to  determine my fate..

Rumination makes folk get neurotic
So we have to have some means to stop it.
Some find a cold bath
Sets them on the right path
For thinking is bad for the ecstatic.

What to worry about when you have nothing to worry about

may.jpg

1.If you leave your bedroom window wide open in hot weather it might get struck by lightning  as a storm generally arrives here in the heat and you will have to have all the windows in the house replaced which costs thousands. And where will you live meanwhile?
2.Or someone might climb a ladder, enter and steal your computer or TV or your fake jewellery.
3.Should you buy some cotton dresses/trousers as you are too hot but then it is nearly August and so it will soon be autumn and how can you decide.
4 If you wear open toed sandals might you trip  on a paving stone?
5.Is it wasteful heating hot water and then being too tired to have a bath?
6.Should you visit someone you don’t like much as you know they are lonely or will it be better to allow them to realise nobody wants to see them because they are egoistical and they might be able to change if left alone? Or as that is unlikely, what ought you to do?
7.Is it ethical to go to church just to meet people?
8.Is it ethical to go to an Urgent Care Centre to talk to people in the waiting room for your research  into  why people visit such places without telling anyone in the hospital?
9.Is it ethical to go because you like their coffee?
10.Or you are lonely?
11 Should  the PM curtsey?Should the Pope curtsey to our Queen?
12 Should the Queen kiss the Pope’s ring?
13 Should you leave the washing out all night ?
14 Was the owl you saw today real or plastic? Does it matter?

Epitaph on a Tyrant by W. H. Auden

Epitaph on a Tyrant

Perfection, of a kind, was what he was after,

And the poetry he invented was easy to understand;
He knew human folly like the back of his hand,
And was greatly interested in armies and fleets;
When he laughed, respectable senators burst with laughter,
And when he cried the little children died in the streets.

By sacredness

Before we go to bed   we   vegetate
No need for teacher but  a compost heap.
And as we vegetate, we drift to sleep
While in our dreams  our little mind debates

But mostly we’re  unknowing in this dark
Where  God himself may manifest at will.
His dazzling darkness  makes our souls be still
And wait  for strikes by  living ,glowing spark.

But in the morning ,we  come  back to  strife
Take up our work and suffer every stroke.
From sapling to the oldest, strongest oak
Each  must choose again its proper life

Every look we cast at others  strikes
Reflects and shows us what we have become
And when there is no movement,  we are done
Our mind and  heart have chosen what they like.

So in our end we vegetate again
And  no more rise to labour in the day
We  fertilise the fields passed on our way
We show the end of woman and of man.

A  daily round becomes  our life and death.
We  live because  we’re  breathed by sacredness.

Spring by Gerard Manley Hopkins

Nothing is so beautiful as Spring –

   When weeds, in wheels, shoot long and lovely and lush;
Thrush’s eggs look little low heavens, and thrush
Through the echoing timber does so rinse and wring
The ear, it strikes like lightnings to hear him sing;
The glassy peartree leaves and blooms, they brush
The descending blue; that blue is all in a rush
With richness; the racing lambs too have fair their fling.
What is all this juice and all this joy?
A strain of the earth’s sweet being in the beginning
In Eden garden. – Have, get, before it cloy,
Before it cloud, Christ, lord, and sour with sinning,
Innocent mind and Mayday in girl and boy,
Most, O maid’s child, thy choice and worthy the winning.

Dark jewels

I have listened to the arguments of fools
I have heard them like a donkey bray
I have looked within and found dark jewels.

I have studied  algebra like Boole’s
I read the works of Euclid and  obeyed
I have listened to the arguments of fools.

I have  been to colleges and schools
I have seen the wolves therein who prey.
I have looked within and found dark jewels

I have earned my knowledge and my tools
I have kept them current day by day
I have listened to the arguments of  fools

I have loved strange men whom I thought cool
I have often felt the need to pray
I have looked within and found dark jewels

So we each must fumble  through the day
Knowledge and perception show the way
I have listened to the arguments of fools
I have looked within and found dark jewels.

Impartial

IMG_0206

My husband was very impartial
He never cared what food he ate
Kippers with apple pie
Sardines in streams went by
He took it all well, as his fate.

My husband was neutral in conflict
He didn’t mind what others thought
He  listened impartially
And always cautiously
Till up flew a thought  which he caught.

Myself,I am well even handed
The left is as long as it’s broad
The right one is stronger
So it may last longer.
Keep me quite well,my dear Lord.
