Children were fascinated by cracks in the pavement
By gutters where they rolled marbles
By grids with slime hanging down into the water
By places where they could hide
By the location of sweet shops
By a few rare places where there were frogs or other amphibians
Sand left by workman
Abandoned hand carts and trollies
They chased tom cats
Climbed the walls and fences grazed knees and cut hands
They were alive one way or another
