Willingness to live our given lives

I wrote this poem a few months ago but although it has attracted many readers I’ve never been quite contented with it so I have tried to change the parts that seemed not quite right to me.

The pathways to the heart are learned by love

And those who  find this knowledge never lose.

Though virtue and her graces help us from above

All  we  see are hills and rocky views.

With willingness to cross the  seas of mud,

To drag ourselves  through  tangled briar-filled woods.

Our soul  shows us the  truth and  what is good,

For trees that looked quite dead are now in bud.

With flowers kissing feet and gnarled toes

Encouragement is  finally received

And as we smell the fragrance of the rose,

We know  our gladdened  hearts were not deceived.

For Virgil, fortune favours those with steadfast feet.

The journey may be long, the end is sweet.

Note:The saying “Fortune favours the brave” is attributed to several people..Virgil,Pascal,Montaigne are ones I have found

Elegy for Mihalyi Csikzentmihalyi

Mihalyi was a saint of sorts;

he improved, with his search for understanding,

the lives of so many yearning writers;

the lame in spirit heard his Zen like words.

He could not have imagined the journey

From Hungary to Zurich to Chicago

A glimpsed mandala led to the heart of the impossible image

How did he learn to trust the flow?

The Rhine flowing down to the North Sea

May start as some minute spring

At the confluence of the gravity of water and earth.

And those then who have cast their nets into that sea

May bring in treasures not found in the business of cities.

At the first sighting, the image seemed hazy

Then the words began to flow like current through a wire.

Like a river cutting slowly through rocks of marble,

like an unknown sage from the Himalyan Alps

who had kissed the lips of his muse more than once

As she floated like a ghost, no,more like music

Tracing concentric spheres into the air

Till the universe was singing.

What was most human was his appetite, his love.

Touch the hem of his garment, follow your flow

Cut your path through the hard darkness until you find

The sunlit sea you were made to swim in

Meeting

Stepping onto that fragile bridge

Which swayed in the breeze,
Stepping onto that fragile bridge
Was a difficult moment
Though I could see you far away.
As we traveled,sometimes we walked,
Sometimes we walked too fast,
Or without paying due attention
To the winds that blew across the water.
Sometimes I felt afraid I would fall
As the bridge swayed too much over
The dark sea.Or you might fall or turn back.
Sometimes we stopped walking and stood waiting
As if some portent would appear
To tell us what to do.
Still, we continued, with trust growing
After each difficulty…
All at once, you were near me,
And I recognised your face..
That light in your eyes
And your hands holding the ropes..
So we stood there, over the churning waters,
And all I wanted to do was to smile.
I wanted to smile.

Secret destinations

“All journeys have secret destinations of which the traveler is unaware.”
Martin Buber
I think he is talking about our life journeys not our outing to the park.

When making a decision of minor importance, I have always found it advantageous to consider all the pros and cons. In vital matters, however, such as the choice of a mate or a profession, the decision should come from the unconscious, from somewhere within ourselves. In the important decisions of personal life, we should be governed, I think, by the deep inner needs of our nature.”
