Definition of Half Rhyme

Half rhyme is one of the major poetic devices. It is also called an “imperfect rhyme,” “slant rhyme,” “near rhyme,” or “oblique rhyme.” It can be defined as a rhyme in which the stressed syllables of ending consonants match, however the preceding vowel sounds do not match.

For instance, in words such as “shape” and “keep” the consonance is very strong. The final consonant sounds remain similar, but the ending vowel sounds are different in half rhyme. Similar to these two words “moon” and “run,” and in the words “hold” and “bald,” the ending consonant sounds are similar, whereas vowel sounds are different.

It is generally used to give an inharmonious feeling in a rhyme scheme. Poets can bring variations in their choice of words by using half rhymes. It is also known as an imperfect, near, off, or sprung rhyme. Half rhyme is exclusively used as a poetic device

  1. Katherine, I was just wandering by your post and wished to say hello and send you my best wishes. David

    1. Thank you so much,David.I am feeling happy after my outing last night.I have some photos but not transferred yet.It was quite funny as neither I nor the cab driver knew the place. And there were many churches there. He was a student from Iran.A very kind man

  2. Well thank you very much for this explanation Katherine. I find this kind of rhyme appealing and without being aware til now of what I was doing use it from time to time in the prose that i write. These days i rarely write poetry. .

I just said good night to you a few hours ago and here we are up again, I having my first coffee. I must feel ready for writing today because I’m getting ready to do our laundry. When I do laundry I generally have a good energetic day of writing. I usually sleep about four hours a night, sometimes less, rising about four hours before my wife Diana. By the time she gets up I’m eager to talk to someone–her–and I think I overpower her with conversation.

    Best wishes

    1. I like Hopkins’ poetry very much but I didn’t know a lot about his rhyming..I hope you do have a productive day.I am looking for my phone.. it says it is switched off so maybe I dropped it outside.I will get the number blocked. My husband cooked but he never did laundry. He saod once his jumpers smell funny so I informed him they will if you never wash them.! If onlt I could wash them now.The sun is shining here while I wait for the pharmacy to bring something and then I can go out to get a new SIM card.It is not an expensive phone
I like to feel I am doing something so if I am not up to hard work I put some clothes into the washing machine.Later on I want to try a poem sith sprung rhythm.I think I have used hal rhymes without knowing.Better to write and then learn new things as you go along. Thanks David for your comment.
