Do we want to be equal?

It seems that many  men and women loved ”  Fifty shades of grey”  which is sado-masochistic..I fear I only managed 5 pages and tossed it aside like an oldglove,as my husband used to say.But just now I was reading a little of a book whichmentions an issue close to that

The Death of Sigmund Freud: Fascism, Psychoanalysis and the Rise of Fundamentalism

Mark Edmundson
Quote:Freud became preoccupied by tyranny.. with human beings hunger  for power…and  with the human desire to be dominated…..
Freud appeared to believe many of us like to be dominated and certainly the way many women dress nowadays and indeed in the last two hundred years at least in  Europe seems to show that they are prepared to suffer pain in order to gain male attention with shape-wear,underwired bras, high heels and also plastic surgery.
and they will do  all that to get a man and then complain when he asks them to boil a few hundred handkerchiefs or make a bed.Actually we bought our bed in a shop but you catch my drift?Do we really wissh to be equal politically or personally?

  1. Fascinating question. 😉 As for Freud? Whatever else he might or might not have done…he certainly attracts attention. 😉

    1. I think it’s a pity people did not heed what he was thinking and writing about the love of tyranny and that people could enjoy it and honour the tyrant…..

  2. so, did you actually buy 50 shades? I heard a discussion on Radio4 recently where one suggestion was that it was meant to be comic. (never read any of it, so I have no idea)

At some level, I think lots of people like to be dominated, in the sense that it can be a relief to shed decision-making to others. Thus, many people like strong government and can get quite uneasy if they are offered too much ‘choice’. (Apparently, Vladimir Putin is very popular with many in Russia, for example) I’m probably extrapolating from what you meant and I doubt many of us like actually to be hurt but I think we are all happy to be ‘led’ to some extent.

The other question you raise is whether women dress to snare men or is it more to compete with one another?

    1. I looked at it before I knew what it . was.. ……….Badly written… pathetic…
I don’t really know who women dress for.I dress to look cheerful to others if possible… so not too .much grey and beige. But it shows the desire of people for this type of stuff..
