Free expression

“The peculiar evil of silencing the expression of an opinion is, that it is robbing the human race; posterity as well as the existing generation; those who dissent from the opinion, still more than those who hold it. If the opinion is right, they are deprived of the opportunity of exchanging error for truth: if wrong, they lose, what is almost as great a benefit, the clearer perception and livelier impression of truth, produced by its collision with error.”
― John Stuart Mill, On Liber

  1. I could not agree with you more. I think of late this has been more of a truism than ever before. People simply cannot say what they feel – there is an idea of a universal fact that is forced upon us en mass and everything else is considered inaccurate conjecture, although we all know a ‘fact’ is as manufactured as anything. Urgh. Glad you wrote this xo

      1. I felt very badly for her. She has more than a right to her opinion, she should be able to voice it without being dammed, or shamed, that’s definitely gotten worse with time. Well said. Few things can be proved but letting all sides speak is essential. Nowadays if you are against any of the popular subjects du jour then you are ostracized and that is seen as free speech?

      2. Oh you know they are. Anything to bring someone down who was formerly a heroine but so easily toppled by the haters in the wings. I think she will endure and rise above, because she’s a bright talented woman but of course it’s wrong – so wrong – that she had to even experience this when all she did was disagree with the trending status quo
